Ukrainian music is not only red boots, plastic flower crowns, embroidered shirts and cheerful “folk show” stereotypes.
Even though the Soviet Union no longer exists, many of the clichés it created about Ukrainian culture still survive on European stages today.
For decades, authentic Ukrainian traditions were simplified, controlled and reshaped into polished Soviet-style performances that often erased the real ritual, rawness and regional identity of the music itself.
And unfortunately, those images are still widely presented abroad as “traditional Ukrainian culture”.
